It was late enough in the day that I could have started primping for dinner at Victor’s, but I opted to do something more productive like pace around the room instead. I still hadn’t decided how I felt about the invitation to share a meal with my ex, but I couldn’t see any real harm in it. I’d need to eat, anyway, so what did it matter if I did it in the company of a man who’d asked me to be his wife?

Who was I trying to kid? I was nervous as hell, my mind reeling with questions.

What was Victor’s motivation for the request? What was I supposed to talk about to fill the silence between bites? What if he demanded to know why I’d said no to his proposal, a question even I didn’t know how to answer? Was he going to try to get back together with me?

To calm my nerves, I did some more digging on Evonne’s case. Victor had used his database for me once again to look up Vera Bryant’s phone number and home address. That’s where I’d focus next by giving her a call. Given how the Heatwave Daily interview had gone, I had a sense of what I might be in for. I was optimistic she’d answer my questions truthfully, however, since her mouth didn’t seem to have a filter.

She picked up on the second ring, sounding preoccupied. Cartoony music blared in the background, making it difficult to hear her. “Win! Turn that thing down!” she called to who I assumed was her daughter. “Don’t you sass me, miss! Go to your room. Now.”

I waited patiently while Vera and the girl squabbled, thankful that I only had a bad-mannered cat in my home to give me grief. After what sounded like a few cries of protest, the line on Vera’s end went blissfully quiet.

“Lord, that girl is on my last nerve today,” Vera muttered.

I wasn’t sure if it was appropriate to call a stranger’s child a brat in agreement, so I made a noncommittal grunting sound. I then quickly explained why I was calling.

“So, you’re some kind of inventor?”

“No, I’m an investigator,” I clarified, going on to provide a few more details.

“And, what, you think that crew of losers my ex has taken up with might have had something to do with this girl going missing?” She didn’t sound too convinced.

“Honestly, I don’t know. But you mentioned ayahuasca in your interview, which is also being used by the group who might know where this girl is. Problem is, I don’t know where to find them.”

“And how did you find me?” she asked, her tone distrustful.

While annoying, I admired her wariness. She was wise to keep her privacy guarded. Far too many people these days trip over themselves to provide personal details about their lives simply because they’ve been asked. Or, worse, because they want to show off on the internet. Go ahead and brag about your expensive new car and the fancy vacation you’re taking.
